Visit, Study, or Work in Canada

Visa /eTA

Most visitors need a Temporary Resident Visa to enter Canada.

To get your TRV or eTA, you need to provide sufficient evidence and convince an immigration officer that you meet the requirements listed below:

  • You have a valid reason for visiting Canada

  • You have enough financial funds to cover your trip expenses

  • You will return to your country of residence before your authorization expire

  • You are not inadmissible to Canada (no criminal records, no adverse travel history worldwide and other criteria etc.)

Citizens and permanent residents of certain countries might be visa-exempt; however, they need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if they arrive or transit through Canada to another country by air.

We provide assistance to our clients with applying for TRVs and eTAs.

Super visa
(for parents and grandparents)

A super visa allows holders to visit their children or grandchildren, who have permanent resident status or Canadian citizenship, for up to 2 years at a time with the opportunity to re-enter Canada for 10 years.

If your goal is to work or study in Canada, then an eTA or visa is not sufficient; you also need to get a work permit or study permit. A study permit allows the holder to stay in Canada and study.

Most often, you need to apply for a study permit before entering Canada if the duration of the training program they are taking is longer than six months.

If you want to study at a post-secondary institution in Canada, you need to get admitted to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

After you apply for a study permit and get approved, the immigration authorities will issue you a TRV or eTA (depending on your country).

When you cross the Canadian port of entry, you will receive a paper copy of your study permit. However, a study permit does not allow you to re-enter Canada if you do not have a valid visa.

A valid study permit allows students to work off-campus (up to 20 hours per week) and full-time during school-scheduled breaks.

However, if you are a co-op student, you need to apply for a work permit.

Your spouse or common-law partner might be eligible to apply for an open work permit if you hold a work or student permit.

We recommend you read all the conditions listed on your permit and consult with our licensed professional. Please do not hesitate to reach out for assistance with your applications.

A Post-Graduate Work Permit is an open work permit that allows you to work in Canada after successful graduation for any legitimate employer. Please note that not all DLI have programs eligible for PGWP; we recommend you consult with us before you apply to study in Canada.

Workers / Employers

If you held PGWP once, you would not be eligible to apply again (unless there is an exemption). However, you can apply for another type of work permit from within Canada if you have a valid job offer supported by LMIA or have an LMIA-exempt job.

There are several types of LMIA:

  • for permanent residency

  • for high-wage positions

  • for low-wage positions

  • for agricultural workers

  • for in-home caregivers

  • for Global Talent Stream

Some work permits are exempt from an LMIA under one of the International Mobility Programs. Some business visitors, airline crew members, and professional athletes might be exempt from LMIA and Work Permit.

For employers:

If you are experiencing a labour shortage and want to consider hiring a foreign worker using the Labour Market Impact Assessment option, please book a consultation with us.
